Hanoi, Vietnam: Review of Hanoi Discovery Hotel

Travel Date: November 2014

If you’re traveling to Hanoi on a budget, I would suggest to stay anywhere around Old Quarter. We stayed at the Hanoi Discovery Hotel located at 22 Luong Ngoc Quyen Street in Old Quarter. It’s a family-run Guesthouse and I would recommend it to anyone for its excellent service, great location and of course because it’s budget-friendly.

What I liked most about Hanoi Discovery Hotel

I initially chose this hotel because of the good reviews I read here in Tripadvisor, and I’m glad to have stayed here. Here’s why:

Excellent service.

I must say that this is the main strength or selling point of this guesthouse. Seriously, I have never met a friendlier hotel manager or host in any of my backpacking experience. The Staff, especially Mrs. Nhan, were very friendly, warm and accommodating. We were staying in Hanoi for only 2 days and Mrs. Nhan booked us for a day tour in Hanoi (Bai Dinh Pagoda and Trang An) and the tour was just amazing and worth it. She was very patient in answering all our questions around the Old Quarter area (about food, shopping, etc.) plus, her English is good so we had fun chatting with her about Vietnam/Hanoi. For our midnight flight she also booked the taxi/van for us (which was cheap) going back to the airport and her Staff helped carry all our stuff/luggage all the way to the main street. So, thank you very much for the excellent service, appreciate it!

Great Location.

It’s located along Luong Ngoc Quyen Street in Old Quarter, where all the night street cafes (parties) happen. Just a few corners from the hotel, you will find the Bun Cha places to eat at lunch, other local restaurants, and the stores to shop for clothes, bags, etc. The hotel provided us a detailed street map of the Old Quarter, which helped us a lot in exploring the area.

Budget-friendly.

This hotel is budget friendly. Plus, our room (standard twin room) was clean, equipped with AC, with TV and fridge. The bathroom has towels and toiletries too. Mrs. Nhan also lent me a hair dryer (for free).

Just take note though that:

– There is no elevator so you have to carry all your stuff going to the rooms from the 2nd floor and up. But of course, the Staff  will help carry them for you.
– In the standard room where we stayed at, the shower/bathroom facility was just average, but we didn’t mind as long as there is hot shower and good plumbing.

Overall, we had a wonderful stay and would recommend Hanoi Discovery Hotel to everyone! 🙂
